“Do you want a walk?” Davin demanded suddenly, looking up from the piece of paper he was reading.

Ana waved a hand. “You go. I wouldn’t want to cramp your style.”

Davin blinked. Then laughed. “Oh, no, this isn’t Nye. Lyssa wants to see us.” He waved the note he was still holding. “She said she’d come see us tonight, but we could go and see her if you’re free.”

“All going well?”

Davin pushed the paper across so she could read it. “She doesn’t say much, but when I spoke to her the other day the potions were selling quicker than Farnall’s buns.”

“I’d like a walk.” She was especially happy for an excuse to leave the palace and be out of Tamas’s reach. And the prospect of returning with a few coins in her hand was enough to set a smile on her face.

Outside the sky was overcast, the air cooler than it had been for several days. Ana held Willan closer and chattered to him as they walked, pointing out anything she thought would interest him.

It wasn’t market day, so the city was quiet. Ana spotted a toy shop as they walked and slowed enough to peer into the window, letting Willan take a look, which prompted much gurgling and pointing.

“We can pop in later, if you like,” Davin suggested, walking back to her side when he realised she’d stopped.

Ana nodded. “I think we’d both like that.” Money to spend. Spare money that wouldn’t be needed for soap or candles or all of the million things she used to have to think about. There were few advantages to being the king’s hostage, but she might as well make the most of the ones she could find. “Soon, sweetling,” she promised Willan.

A few minutes walking brought them to Lyssa’s healing practise. Davin led her up a set of stairs. Lyssa’s rooms were over a goldsmith’s workshop. Ana wondered if the choice was a deliberate one. Almost certainly; Lyssa’s parents wouldn’t want her to be working over a butcher’s or a tanner’s; the location itself proclaimed the sort of clients welcomed.

At the top of the stairs they entered a small lobby. Davin pushed straight through another door, setting the bell jangling. A familiar, herbal smell greeted Ana as she followed.

Lyssa was sitting behind a polished counter. She looked up at the sound of the bell, her fingers pausing on the ledger before her. Her social smile froze when she saw them. “Davin?”

“What’s up?” Davin asked. “We got your note.”

Lyssa glanced around uncertainly. Ana frowned. “I said I’d come to the palace tonight,” she hissed.

Davin frowned at her less than enthusiastic welcome. “We had nothing better to do.”

“You weren’t supposed to come here.”

Ana rolled her eyes, holding Willan’s waving fist so she could press a kiss to his plump knuckles. “No one saw us, Lyssa. I’m sure we haven’t brought the tone down unacceptably. And we’ve brought more potion.”

She waved towards Davin, but his gaze was fixed on Lyssa, seeing something Ana had missed. “What happened?”

Lyssa swallowed.
